A small institute, on purpose

Our story

Roshandaan started in 2011 as evening maths tuition for eight Class 10 students, in Meera Shrivastava's parents' house. Meera had taught maths at a CBSE school for nine years, and kept noticing the same thing: students who were good at maths were losing marks because nobody had ever let them ask "why?".

The room she taught in had one small window high on the wall, right above the blackboard: a roshandaan. In the evenings it was the only light. When there were too many students for the house and the classes moved to two rooms above a stationery shop in 2014, the name came with them.

In 2016 her husband, Alok, left his sales job to run the office. In 2018 we started Hindi-medium batches, because MP Board students kept telling us they understood the subject but not the English it was taught in. Today the same teachers teach both mediums, with notes in both languages, and that is what most parents know us for.

During the 2020 lockdown, classes moved to video calls and notes went out as photos on WhatsApp. In 2022 we moved to the whole first floor of a building on Main Road: four classrooms, an office and a small library corner. Since 2024 we have taught only Class 11 and 12, plus a short bridge course after the Class 10 exams.

We're still small on purpose: about 340 students, nine teachers, and no batch bigger than 30.
